2024 SEASON – 17 YEARS OF PSC
2024, the 17th year of Prague Shakespeare Company, was our most impactful season yet, including multiple international tours, multiple performances at the iconic Estates Theatre, Prague Castle and our home theatre of Divadlo Na Pradle.
GROUND-BREAKING EU CREATIVE EUROPE CO-PRODUCTION of HAMLET
The highlight of our 2024 season was PSC’s unique and ground-breaking EU Creative Europe co-production with the bremer shakespeare company and the Odessa Academic Music and Drama Theatre, uniting three of Europe’s most exciting companies to present a multi-lingual (English, German, Czech, Ukrainian) production of Hamlet directed by PSC Artistic Director Guy Roberts, that performed in Bremen, Germany and both the Estates Theatre in partnership with Narodni divadlo (the Czech National Theatre) and at Prague Castle in partnership with the Czech Summer Shakespeare Festival. In 2025 the production has been selected to perform on Shakespeare’s Birthday, 23 April, at the world-famous Gdansk Shakespeare Theater in Poland and will return for a special engagement at the Estates Theater on 26 April.
OTHER INTERNATIONAL TOURS – USA, ITALY, & KOSOVO
Other international tours include the premiere of a hilarious new co-production of Twelfth Night with the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, directed by CSC Artistic Director Brian Phillips, performing in Cincinnati in November and December of 2024 and performing in Prague at Divadlo Bez Zabradli in February 2025 and the PSC/Miloco co-production of A Beggar’s Opera, directed by Daniel Brown, both at Divadlo Na Pradle and on tour to Prizrenfest in Prizren, Kosovo in July. PSC toured to Italy for the first time in the summer of 2024 with performances of The Tempest, directed by Kiara Pipino, in Genoa at the Teatro Lunaria Festival and to Venice with a collection of shows: The Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, The Comedy of Errors and The Tempest.
PSC at the ESTATES THEATER
Our partnership with the Czech National Theatre was stronger than ever and included multiple performances at the world-famous Estates Theater (where Mozart premiered Don Giovanni in 1787) including Shakespeare and the Alchemy of Gender, conceived by and starring Lisa Wolpe; we also presented the little performed Shakespeare play The Two Noble Kinsmen directed by Lisa Wolpe; What’s In A Name – a bi-lingual English and Arabic performance fresh take on Romeo and Juliet, focusing on amplifying and uplifting the voices of the female characters in the play. The show was performed by an all-Middle Eastern company of women and one man. This is a special project PSC has been developing for over two years and we were delighted to have this positive representation of Arab female voices. We most recently highlighted the horrific and deplorable history of antisemitism with the premiere of a major new Shakespeare production of The Merchant of Venice starring the American Jewish actor Irwin Appel as Shylock in the first English language production of the play ever at the Estates Theater in Prague.
PSC at DIVADLO NA PRADLE
Our home base theatre of Divadlo Na Pradle featured the premiere of a major new production of Much Ado About Nothing, directed by Brendon Fox, at Divadlo Bez Zabradli starring Elissa Levitt and Josh Morrison as Beatrice and Benedick and the return of audience favorites A Beggar’s Opera, The 39 Steps, The Thanksgiving Play and Dracula, the Journal of Jonathan Harker. Additionally we hosted artists from the Australian Shakespeare Company and their production of Once Were Pirates.
SUMMER SHAKESPEARE INTENSIVES
We have shown our commitment to developing the next generation by offering over $150,000 in scholarships to talented young theatre artists from across the world to attend our 2024 Summer Shakespeare Intensive. This summer we brought students to Stratford-upon-Avon and Lon
ONGOING SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE
As you may remember, over three years ago PSC responded to the war in Ukraine by opening our doors to Ukrainian artist refugees and proudly sponsored the creation of a new Ukrainian Theatre company – Ukraine Yellow and Blue as well as many Ukrainian theatre artists – providing much needed employment, community, training and an artistic home for these terrifically talented individuals as they struggle to create a new life in Prague. This effort alone represented a financial commitment by PSC of over $110,000 in production and financial support to our new Ukrainian friends over the last three years. Our sponsorship & partnership with the Prague based Ukrainian theatre Ukrainian Theatre Yellow and Blue continued with several amazing performances at Divadlo Na Pradle starring Ukrainian artists displaced from the war in Ukraine. Look for more of these special performances in 2025!
2024 NOT OVER YET – MORE EXCITING SHOWS
And we have more exciting productions still planned for 2024, including a family-friendly holiday special double bill performance of a new musical adaptation of A Christmas Carol & A Midwinter Night’s Dream on 27 December at the Estates Theatre followed by an exciting international tour of A Midwinter Night’s Dream to the Atliertheater in Vienna, Austria on 30 December!
2025, 18 YEARS OF PSC
As we move into the 18th year of Prague Shakespeare Company in 2025, help us get started on the right foot. We will announce multiple thrilling productions in early 2025 – but here’s a sneak peak at what to expect: A return to Bremen, Germany and the world-famous bremer shakespeare company with our A Midwinter Night’s Dream in January; the return of our all-time audience favorite hit play Venus in Fur on Valentine’s Day 14 February at the Estates Theater, the return of Hamlet at the Estates Theater on 26 April; a new world premiere of an original musical in June; the return to Prague Castle in partnership with the Czech Summer Shakespeare Festival in July; the return to Italy with performances in Genova, Venice and Bari in August; and a new premiere of a Shakespeare play in the fall.
